My prayer this Mother's Day

I want a safe world for HER

I want a safe world for HER

Recently our team spent hours with a young person who had been groomed sexually for the porn industry.  Underage, vulnerable this young person had been strategically groomed.  I don’t think there was a dry eye in the room.  Hearts were broken, lives shattered.

At the Commission on the Status of Women in New York,  Melinda Tankard Reist said,

The global porn industry runs primarily on the backs of women and girls and disseminates sexual exploitation primarily online.

It is a mammoth dispenser of sexualised violence and misogyny; the world’s most powerful sexual groomer.

It is also the world’s largest department of education. Many titles feature the sexual abuse and rape of teen and underage girls. When the war in Ukraine broke out, the most popular search term on porn sites was for ‘Ukrainian girl’.

The mass dehumanization of women and girls in mainstream pornography leads to an epidemic of violence against them. We are confronted with Big Tech at its worst.

Young men are learning to take pleasure in and get off on torture and humiliation videos, fed a diet of rape porn and racist sexual abuse.

Schoolboys entertain each other with gang rape video and girls are reduced to porn fantasy sex props.

The global research establishes pornography as a driver of violence against women and girls.”

My prayer this Mother's Day

I don’t know how you feel when you read the above but my heart aches and I get so angry with this multi billion dollar industry which is devouring our young people.

36 years ago  I completed my social work degree.    I was only 1 of 2 in a class of over 30 who had objected to the idea that the porn industry was simply an expression of sexual freedom and not harmful.

It was hard as a young 18, 19, 20 and 21 year old standing up to adults and disagreeing with them.

Today we have evidence that my educators were wrong.  Dangerously wrong.

The porn industry is linked to family violence, the oppression of women and children.

The porn industry is a $97 billion dollar industry.

It is easy to feel like a David against a Goliath.  If you are a parent whose child has been exploited by the porn industry you feel powerless, voiceless, unseen, living in fear for your beloved child.

I want to make a difference this Mother’s Day.  I genuinely want to say, “Happy Mother’s Day” and here’s the kind of world I’m advocating for for your child.”

I don’t want to be sweet and nice, give and receive cute gifts.  I want to tangibly help the mothers and the fathers who are raising HER.

I want a safer world for HER.

How can you make a difference?
